Part 3 – PEI Present Day

Prince Edward Island

Present Day

Chapter 20

Jason couldn’t help but stare wide-eyed at the large house at the end of the tree-lined driveway.

His uncle said they would be moving to a “big old house,” but this was not what he expected. The house was impressive. “Old” it might be, but it certainly wasn’t dilapidated.

The house consisted of three stories with a high centre gable, decorative trim, and a large veranda along the front. There was a cupola at the peak of the centre gable that offered an unobstructed view of the entire property.

The house was angled slightly, so that from the front veranda one could look out over a wide lawn. He could see a low stone fence that stretched across the front lawn and curved to the right out of sight. Bordering the stone fence was a line of trees, through which he could see the waters of a large bay and a red sandy beach. The side of the property that faced the main road as well as the back did not seem to have any structure marking the boundaries.

Space: that was the thing that stuck out the most in Jason’s first impressions of Canada. Born and raised in London, with most of his travels limited to Europe, he was amazed at just how much open space there was. It seemed to him they were travelling forever but had seen little in the way of large cities—mostly towns, villages, and farmland. And the property on which the house sat seemed to be huge.

It was hard to believe that less than 48 hours ago he was sitting in a lounge at London’s Heathrow Airport, waiting to board a flight for Canada.

He wasn’t entirely happy about the arrangement. After all, he was leaving everything that was familiar to him. He understood why it was necessary; that it was to protect him from the man who had murdered his parents. However, understanding why didn’t necessarily make it any easier.

He manoeuvred himself out of the car and leaned on his crutches, studying the house that was to become his home. No, he thought, this is where I’m going to live. He no longer had any hope of ever again finding a place that he could truly call “home.” In truth, he wasn’t sure he actually wanted to find such a place.

He glanced up at the row of windows on the top floor, and a movement caught his eye. Very briefly, he thought he saw a curtain move and a face looking down on him. Then it was gone. He wasn’t sure he had really seen anything; maybe a slight breeze had ruffled the curtain.

“Mr. Carver! Welcome home!” called a voice. His attention was drawn to a heavyset woman coming down the front steps. Although stocky, she wasn’t fat, and while she looked to be about sixty, she moved with the grace of someone much younger.

“Hi, Edith,” said Richard, “it’s good to be home.” He nodded towards Jason and introduced him.
